While having the right bed accessories, such as a supportive mattress, comfortable pillows, soft blankets, fresh sheets, etc. are essentials, keeping your sleep haven clean also goes a long way in ensuring you get a good healthy sleep.
The very act of clearing the clutter in your bedroom and cleaning every nook and corner of your sleep sanctuary, will make you feel happy and take your attention away from the stress of your life. Reasons why you will sleep better in a clean bedroom
- Clutter causes anxiety
Being surrounded by clutter will not allow your mind to relax. Several boxes strewn around and papers flying everywhere, are not scenes that speak of tranquillity and calmness. Clutter will not let you rest, it will keep you in panic mode, and hence, will hinder your sleep.
- A bed for sleeping
According to many sleep experts around the world, a bed should only be used for sleeping (and sex, of course!). Using it for eating, working etc. has a negative impact on sleep. If you use your bed only for sleeping, then as soon as you lie down, your brain will inform the rest of the body that it is time to sleep. Doesn’t that sound like a blessing?

If possible, then consider having no electronics in your bedroom. Electronic devices emit blue light which negatively affects sleep. This light fools your brain into believing that it is still daytime. As a result, melatonin is not secreted adequately, and hence you don’t feel sleepy. Melatonin secretion is also crucial for skin health. It helps the body repair skin cells. Because of this reason, when you do not sleep well or get the right number of sleep hours, you tend to get breakouts or your acne worsens.
Having clean bed sheets improves the hypoallergenic quality of your mattress. As a result, dust-mites, moulds, microbes, etc. are all kept at bay. This is particularly helpful for those who have sensitive skin and/or eyes. Also, if you are asthmatic or tend to catch a cold easily, it is highly advisable that you keep your room clean and clutter-free for good sleep.
- Air quality
By keeping your room clean, you keep the air in your room fresh. To be able to sleep well, you need to be able to breathe well. To ensure this, try dusting and vacuuming your room as regularly as possible. Having a carpet in the room is a good way to trap the dust from the air and ensure the air is breathable. However, you need to keep the carpet clean and use a vacuum cleaner to clear the dust accumulated every week.
- Right number of pillows
Though almost all of us love throwing a lot of down pillows on our bed because it looks and feels comfy and cozy, it is recommended by sleep experts that you get rid of so many pillows and instead invest on one or two good pillows. You might want to get a memory foam pillow to give your head and neck the support it needs and deserves. A memory foam pillow will easily conform to the shape of your head, and ensure the neck and the spine are in one straight line.
